The elder goddess is not blind, nor is she stupid. The bodies are grotesque, to say the least, but their unpleasantness is incomparable to the happiness seeing her daughter brings to Demeter. “Perhaps I should have called ahead. I can see that you are busy.”

          Persephone steps back. She has been back barely a week, and the recently deceased have not yet learned what it means to respect their queen. Those from around the world had not known the truth of the Queen of the Underworld, and those skinned seven had questioned her a time too many. It is not a mistake anyone will be making again. Though she does not regret it, she wishes her mother had not seen it. “No, no — we can go inside.” It is her first instinct to offer food, but she holds her tongue. “How are you, Mother?”
