Instead of answering, Hera chuckled.  Persephone was Demeter’s daughter, and that was reason enough to favor her.  That she had sprung from Zeus’ seed was beside the point.  “I believe she mentioned something of the sort.”  Not that she’d been able to see for herself until now…

“And speaking of kitchens–” she lifts the covered basket on her arm “–I don’t want you to think that I would pay you a visit empty-handed.”

Hekate had asked they petition Olympus upon Persephone’s return, insisting that the months away grew longer. “Petition” was a strong word; the goddess had suggested the Underworld cease taking in the dead until Persephone was free to move as she wished. While the conversation was neither here nor there, it made her smile to know Hekate — strong, opinionated Hekate with her bratty tendencies and childish plots — had friends wherever she went.

“Thank you, Hera.” One of the maids, expertly hidden in the shadows, rushed forward to take the basket before Persephone could wave her away. She motions for the maid to stay with them. “We could walk you to the kitchens, if you wish, though I suggest you not eat anything except for what you’ve brought.”
