“‘Aren’t you afraid of my darkness, my dear?’ Hades asked with mischief in his eyes.
‘No,' Persephone replied, 'You haven’t even seen mine yet.’”

they say he stole her,
as if Persephone were only something to be coveted
and not a goddess in her own right,
as if she were not as feared in their realm as he.

they say that he corrupted her,
that Hades’s flower wilted under the stench of his death
but they forget that Spring is rebirth,
that if anyone could be touched by the underworld and flourish,
that it would be her.

they say that he tricked her,
that she did not want to stay.
but they forget how the winter drags on,
how each year it creeps in sooner,
leaving bones aching for a hint of her warmth,
and it is not because he will not let her leave
it is because
she does not want to go.

my darling,
my //queen.//
you hunger not for fruit
nor flesh.
how may I satisfy you?

he asks this, on hands and knees,
throwing moonbeam blossoms
at the black bramble of my throne.
as if that will appease me.
//flowers.//

as if that will sweeten the sting
of being a maple uprooted,
earth scorched,
a maiden //sheared.//
his orion belt eyes implore me still

what do I want, what do I want?
if I must fester in shadow then it will become //me.//
this fjord of souls, this shadowy grotto.
it will be mine, as sure as I say,
“oh, my king. you will kneel.”

and give me your hand,
your heart,
your helmet, your spear
for you will conquer for me
and it is not your name,
but //mine// all will fear.

“when pomegranate seeds
were handed to me
I crushed them
between my teeth like bones
and said ‘thank you’ with a mouth
dripping blood red juices.
( has no one ever told you
it’s impolite to refuse offerings
such as crowns and kingdoms? )”

“Are you proud mother, of the deflowering of your child.
Are you proud seeing how easily I turn roses into brimstone,
Of how Hades has given me the world underground?
Are you proud mother, of the Queen I’ve become?
(Because I am)”

“Persephone was the daughter of the goddess of harvest and agriculture
Do you think she was so easily tricked by a pomegranate?”

i.
Persephone settles on her throne,
and have you ever seen
a king on his knees?
It’s magnificent.

ii.
Her head feels too light
without a crown
weighing it down.

iii.
Persephone parts her lips
and swallows pomegranate seeds,
one by one,
until they stain her fingers red.
They taste like power.

iv.
Her name
dripping off his tongue
sounds like
a mortal pronouncing
‘goddess’.

iv.
She catches Hades’ laugh
in the hook of her mouth
and lets their breaths mingle.
The flavor of death
is intoxicating.
